Charity event held at the British Embassy the other day for an NPO called Tokyo English Life Line (TELL). Their primary activities include providing telephone and face-to-face counseling for international community within Japan. Such as for those who moved to Japan for employment circumstances and, are facing difficulties adopting to our culture. Or just those that feel stress, face depression and other mental issues. I thought it was a great, and very needed service here in Japan. We have such a big international community while having a very unique culture, life-style and infrastructure to which they may find hard to adjust.
先日、英国大使館で開かれたTokyo English Life Line (TELL)というNPOのチャリティーイベントに行って参りました。TELLの主な活動は、様々な理由で外国から移住して来た方で、日本の文化や生活に溶け込めない・あるいはストレスや鬱を感じる方へのカウンセリングを提供する事です。私はTELLの存在・活動を聞いた時、とても素晴らしい、必要性の高いNPOだと感じました。ここ日本は大変独特な文化・ライフスタイルを持ちながら、実にたくさんの方が他の国から留学や仕事をしに来るからです。なので今回のこの立派なイベントに参加して、TELLやTELLをサポートする企業の代表者・心理学者達のスピーチを聞けて本当に良かったです。
At the event, I got to meet and speak with Bobby Valentine, a baseball coach in Chiba, Japan who also coached Texas Rangers in a past (which I didn't know until I talked to him)! He knew everything about Dallas that I know, about downtown where I work, uptown bars and restaurants, and TCU horned frogs baby!!! (but his son goes to SMU so that make us enemies...lol) I could relate to him so much just for that! Awww I miss Texas!!
Surprisingly, there were a few more people from Texas that night, even a Deloitte partner I met was originally from Houston office, now working in Deloitte Tokyo office - small world!

意外にも、このチャリティーイベントでテキサス出身の方に数人お会いしました。私が勤めているデロイト・テュッシュ・トーマスのパートナー（＝偉い人）が来ていると聞いて紹介してもらったら、彼も、もともとはヒューストン事務所の方で、今は東京のデロイトで働いてる方でした。世間は狭い！
また、今回のスペシャルゲスト、ボビー・バレンタインさんも昔テキサスレンジャーという野球チームの監督をしていたので、私のテキサス経歴を話したら、彼は私が行った大学、住んでる周辺のこと、職場のビルなど全て詳しく知っていて、物凄くローカルな話がたくさんできたので大変嬉しかったです。
